COLLEGE TAILGATES
The 2010 Tailgates You Don’t Want To Miss!
AUBURN AT ALABAMA November 26 (Friday): There’s more than a realistic chance the winner of this game will earn the golden ticket to Atlanta’s SEC championship game (also known as the BCS play-in game). Of course everybody is thinking that means Alabama, but Cam Newton --- formerly the heir ap- parent to Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow at Florida --- may just be all offensive genius Gus Malzahn needs to get the Tigers back to the level of actually being mentioned among good football teams once again. Even if Newton or Malzahn don't manage to get it together this year, it's still the Iron Bowl. Very seldom does it disappoint.
GEORGIA VS. FLORIDA
Oct. 30: First they wanted to change the name of the annual rivalry game,
because, uh … fewer college kids would drink if it wasn’t known as the
“World’s Largest Cocktail Party”?
Yeah, right. Then the gun slinging Tim Tebow busted up the Bulldogs for
the past two seasons as the Gators have won 10 of the past 12. Honestly,
the game is on this list on tradition alone. On paper, right now, it’s probably just yet another win for the Gators. However, in the back of our minds,
we’re reminded that Mark Richt is never more dangerous than when he’s
not overhyped.
MISSISSIPPI STATE AT LSU
Sept. 18: Rivalry game, huh? Well, not so much, but hear us out. We’d love
to say Alabama is the game to see in Baton Rouge, but seriously, unless
you’re hanging with Bama fans, that game may not be much fun. Not to
mention by that point in the season, there’s too good of a chance that
things might have slipped south, or Les Miles might have already taken
off for Michigan after they fire Rich Rod. But you can’t have a Top 10 tailgate without at least one date in Baton Rouge, so, let’s start with the first
one while everybody is still happy. Gosh, them folks know how to cook, eat
and drink. We’d tell you stories about times tailgating before LSU games
if we could remember.
OKLAHOMA VS. TEXAS (Dallas, Texas - Cotton Bowl)
Oct. 2: This was another perfectly fine rivalry game that the PC police —
not to mention endorsement dollars — dug in their claws. But unlike the
Cocktail Party, the AT&T Red River Rivalry (we cringe as we write that), to
heck with it, the non-AT&T Red River Shootout could hold big implications
to the national championship picture. For the past 10 years, at least one
of the teams involved is among the best in college football. Same goes for
this season, too. It's too early to pick winners, but we've never been
among the sharpest knives … Hook 'em.
